Everything You Want to Know About Collagen Induction

Collagen, collagen, collagen. Everyone knows how amazing collagen is for the skin, which is exactly why there are so many creams, supplements, and who knows what else on the market. While some options may work for collagen induction, others… not so much.

So what is my best option?

Instead of trying to artificially add more collagen to your skin, our skincare experts at Vanish Skin Clinic believe collagen induction with microneedling is the best way to slow the aging process. Through scientifically-proven techniques and tools, treatments like microneedling actually improve your body’s ability to produce more collagen for effective, long-lasting results.

What exactly is collagen?

Collagen is a type of protein fiber found in the dermis (deep layer) of your skin and other parts of your body. Many people don’t know that there are actually 16 different types of collagen, but the one that relates to your skin is Type IV.

The natural aging process leads to a decrease in collagen production. And since those fibers are responsible for maintaining the structure of your skin, as they dwindle, your skin becomes more lax and wrinkles emerge.

How to Stimulate Collagen Production for Beautiful, Ageless Skin.

Bear in mind that collagen is extremely sensitive to photodamage. So when people tell you to wear SPF every single day, don’t ignore that advice! Why? It’s pretty simple. UVA and UVB rays from the sun damage your skin at the cellular level. Over time, exposure breaks down collagen fibers, which impacts how well your skin can remain strong, firm, and full of volume.

Do creams really not work to replace lost collagen fibers?

It depends on the type of cream you use. Creams that actually contain collagen don’t typically work as well as the claim. The idea seems nice; all you have to do is rub some collagen onto your face and you’re on your way to aging gracefully. If only it were that easy.

Think about it this way: Collagen fibers are large (in microscopic terms), complex braided structures. Therefore, a cream could include all the pure collagen molecules it wants, but those molecules are too big to penetrate the outer layer of tissue. And if they can’t even reach the outer layers, they definitely aren’t reaching the dermis, which is where all the magic happens.

Note: Not all collagen creams are formulated with pure collagen molecules. Some use collagen peptides instead, which are small enough to reach the dermis.

On the other hand, there are creams made with ingredients that boost collagen production rather than claiming to add collagen to your tissue. For example, creams and moisturizers made with ingredients like retinoids, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants improve the health of your skin by reversing sun damage, increasing moisture, and maintaining the collagen fibers you have.

Collagen induction through professional microneedling

Microneedling, often referred to as collagen induction therapy, is an incredibly effective method for addressing a variety of concerns while stimulating collagen production deep in the skin’s layers.

Dozens of tiny needles create microchannels within the skin that trigger the body’s natural healing process. During that process, fibroblast cells increase collagen production to rebuild “damaged” skin from the treatment. Revamped collagen strengthens your skin’s framework to help reverse signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and more.

One of the biggest benefits of microneedling is that it is a lot less invasive than laser treatments and doesn’t make your skin more sensitive to the sun. As a result, it acts as a great summer alternative to laser treatment that will help you maintain your youthful glow.

Am I a candidate for collagen induction?

Fortunately, most people are candidates for collagen induction since it’s safe for most skin tones and types. We will say people seeking instantaneous results, may not get what they’re looking for, but the best treatments often take time. Because of this, we recommend undergoing a series of initial microneedling treatments (around 3 to 4) for the best results. From there, all you would need are regular maintenance treatments!

However, there are still some people who may not be the best candidate for collagen induction. Before assuming you can’t receive the treatment, however, always visit a professional first. You may end up being a candidate without realizing or your specialist can recommend another aesthetic treatment to reach your goals.

Consider waiting or alternative treatments if you have…

  • Active acne
  • Open wounds
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema

Microneedling also may not be ideal for those who’ve recently had radiation therapy, pregnant women, and people who have skin healing issues.

Do at-home microneedle rollers produce the same results as professional collagen induction?

Not at all.

While some people use at-home microneedling devices to enhance the effects of serums and moisturizers, they don’t have the same collagen inducing benefits as a professional treatment.

On the other hand, medical-grade equipment like the Dermapen® utilize perfectly spaced microneedles that penetrate the skin deeper and more evenly. When performed by a trained, certified skincare professional, you’re less likely to deal with unwanted damage that could lead to negative side effects like scarring or infections.

Bottom line: at-home microneedling could cause more harm than good.

Expected microneedling results and how to boost them

With professional collagen induction therapy, most people can achieve their desired results 3 to 4 months after their initial treatment series. We totally understand you want to see amazing benefits ASAP, but you can’t rush the process. Collagen takes time to rejuvenate and rebuild—it’s science, not a magical instant procedure (we promise those don’t exist).

However, you will probably notice an improvement in the tone and texture of your skin after just one or two treatments! Keep in mind, results are cumulative and vary from person to person. Your skin is just as unique as you are, so don’t expect it to change the way your friend’s did.

After your initial treatments to achieve the results you desire, we recommend maintenance treatments every 4  to 6  months to ensure your skin remains in the best shape for years to come!

With that covered, let’s talk about add-ons that really make your skin shine. At Vanish Skin Clinic, we combine our Dermapen® microneedling with custom serums and LED therapy to boost your results. After the needles create microchannels, they allow skin-rejuvenating serums to seep further into your tissue, which makes your skin more soft and supple. Following the treatment, LED light therapy reduces inflammation and redness while further promoting collagen production.

Step One: Consultation

No matter the treatment you seek, you will always receive a complimentary consultation with one of our experienced microneedling providers. This one-on-one meeting gives us the chance to understand your goals and determine whether microneedling can help you reach them.

Step Two: Treatment

On the day of your appointment, we first apply a topical anesthetic to maximize your comfort. Once your skin fully numbs, we cleanse then choose a medical-grade serum based on your concerns. Afterward, use our microneedling device to “stamp” the surface of your skin with dozens of tiny needles. We finish the treatment with LED therapy to enhance your short- and long-term results.

Step Three: Post Treatment

Directly following your treatment, you may experience mild redness and tightness (similar to a sunburn). While this may cause some discomfort, it is completely normal and typically goes away within 24 hours. As a bonus, you won’t have to worry about downtime!

Some clients worry about pain and/or discomfort that may come from collagen induction therapy. Fortunately, the topical anesthetic makes the overall process virtually painless for most people. Of course, if you ever have concerns (especially if this is your first time), don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. One of our Estheticians or Nurses will be happy to explain what you can expect and walk you through the process.
